Our First Honey Harvest: Sweet Surprises and Hard Lessons

This season brought us our very first honey harvest, and like most things in beekeeping, it didn’t go exactly the way we expected. One hive had been struggling for weeks, so we opened it up with low expectations — mostly to check on the colony and see what might be going wrong.

Instead, we were met with the most unexpected gift: frames full of beautiful, golden honey. It was a lovely surprise from a hive that had been fighting to hang on.

Sadly, over the next few weeks, that hive didn’t make it. Losing a colony is never easy, especially after discovering the honey they worked so hard to create. But nature has its own way of balancing things out.

Our weaker hive stepped in and cleaned out every drop of leftover honey from the lost colony. They didn’t stop there — they even cleaned all the equipment we used during the harvest. No sticky mess, no hours of scrubbing. The bees took care of it all, leaving everything spotless and ready for the next season.

And in a twist that only bees seem to pull off, the strong hive became the weak hive, and the weak hive became the strong. Beekeeping keeps you humble like that. Nothing stays the same for long, and every hive has its own story.

This first harvest taught us a lot — about resilience, surprise, loss, and the incredible teamwork inside a colony. And of course, it gave us our first jars of honey, sweetened by the journey itself.
